In terms of economics (game theory may be), why there are many similar stores in one place? For example, a gas station, supermarket, shop, etc..
The field of economics more like so-called Industrial Organization. See the link in the source look a little deeper into the industrial organization, which as you have mentioned, uses a lot of game theory in its theoretical analysis. To answer your question, on top of my head, similar businesses, tend to cluster in the same location or in the street, because it makes everyone to be more easily identifiable ... consumer to identify a area designated as, for example, the electronic location. Consumers prefer to go to a place where if they find what they need in a store, they do not want to go far to see another store ... also in the same location is easier for consumers to compare prices. Companies need consumers, it is better to have them all together in one place and try to get the biggest piece of the cake. Another reason is copy cat policy. If a store has great sales in one location, another company in my attempts to open a store close to just that. Also why imitation, if you open a store profitable in a particular place is taken by other companies that have initially been a marketing study that took open a store there. Hope this helps.
