Want to adopt a dog from the Humane Society, he has not been tested for heart worm?
I wonder what are the possibilities a dog who are given heartworm, if not prevention. My kids love this dog already and I would like to have your test and discovered she did. I'm much more worrying, or is this a legitimate concern? They did not and test them. I must take it and tried it myself.
Depends on location! Heartworm disease is not common at all in the Pacific Northwest - we can not maintain temperature conditions squito conducive to development. Typical areas of heartworm have a constant temperature - I think more than 10 or no change between day and night - moving 90 degrees the day of 60 degrees at night. So - if it is not proved, although not mentioned where you are, it seems as if in a high risk area (such as Texas! for example). Heartworm is treatable / cureable with access to certain drugs containing arsenic unpleasant. If the disease is at an advanced stage, the dog may get the drug. So - I guess the point is - call some local vets in your area or contact your veterinarian if you have one. Talk to them about the risks in your area. Ask about testing and treatment options. And talk openly and honestly with your children. Let them know your concerns - Tell him what he would do as a family and has been tested positive. If you are unwilling to seek treatment, so do not adopt the dog. If you have - then should adopt. Many parts of the country have no problems heartworm - My dog is not on preventive medicine, because they are simply not the parasite inside here. The rate of infection higher (up to 45%) dogs (not maintained on heartworm preventive) are observed in 150 miles along the Atlantic and Gulf of Gulf of Mexico New Jersey and along the Mississippi River and its major tributaries. Most dogs infected with heartworm can be successfully treated. The objective treatment is to kill all adult worms with an adulticide and all microfilariae with a microfilaricidal. It is important to try to achieve this minimum Adverse effects of drugs and an acceptable degree of complications created by the death of the parasite. Heartworm infected dogs show no symptoms or mild symptoms are a success rate with treatment. Patients showing signs of heartworm disease may be more severely treated successfully, but the possibility of complications and mortality is higher.
